Hi everyone, thought i'd share the latest, even if it's 1h30 am!

Well, glued on the purfling and bindings on no 3 tonight using HHG as per the recent success that was had by my good old pal Alain, i thought i'd replicate the experiment and use some on mine!

I am very slow at this so Bear with me please, i do the purfs first and then the bindings, i am not fast enough nor patient enough to glue both of them together yet so a lot of fiber tape(thanks coach Tony, this tape is wonderful BTW! ) was used to cover around the guitar twice! . HHG is a lot of fun to work with on this.

Ok, here's how it started, PURFLINGS on the top...



PURFLINGS on the back, one nice way to hold it is to tape one end while you work at the other, same for the bindings of course





PURFLINGS once the tape is off...





Now the BINDINGS

On the top and back





And there you go!





Now some other kind of fun will begin with the scraping flush of it all, just can't wait!

Alain, i just loved it, a bit stressful at first but having made my glue a bit thicker than usual, it went on smooth, thanks pal, i'm now sold to HHG everywhere i can on the build, even there! I'll to give you a call and make you hear the tap tone of that too!

Thanks Mark, yes, i must admit that it feels good not having to build so mant jigs during this build.

Thanks brother JJ, i just layed down the glue with the fine spouted(do i say this right?) bottle and the bead coming out was about the size of the purfling channel and a warm wet rag to wipe off the drippings and a dry rag to wipe the wetted wood after so the tape would stick. I intend to use HHG there and everywhere i can on every build since it crystalises to glass in a very short time. Just love it!

Thanks Carlton, i could not agree more, it's always hard for me to visualize the build or plan for what it will look like at the end and i build much as i go, i just have a overall idea of the main components but i'm proud of what it's turning out to be now!

Thanks Dave, you oughta try that too my friend, the HHG sucks big time and in the waist area where you need more pull, it provides the strength needed!

Thanks Ron and Rod, gotta get me a suscription to the fiber tape company for sure at the speed i use it! Yes, love the ebony for the neatness it brings to a build.

BTW, if someone has a tip on being able to glue both the purflings and bindings all together, i'd appreciate thatbecause my fingers hurt so much this morning!

Hey bud, using HHG you'll have to consult the seriously grizzled vets like Mario and anyone else who uses HHG for the entire build process (I just don't know of other's who do this, other wise I'd of mentioned them)

That's a great box coming together there. Do you seal the top or back before taping to prevent any grain tearing? How long did each part have to be taped up for before moving on?

What is your method like? I'm using HHG on my guitar too, but don't
know how I'd lay out bead, slap the binding on, and tape it all in place on
time. I'm using LMI's plasic binding cement for this one, but it would be
nice to know.

Rod...I've been using HHG on all joints for over 4 years. I've never made a guitar without HHG. (Lately I've been doing bindings with CA)

Besides Mario, I believe that Colin, John How, Dave White and a few others are HHG users. And of course, now Serge!

Bob, the live plants are christmas flowers for all the tenants of our building, i have to store them in my shop since there are 125 of them!

Rod, why? for approbation? I already glued the top and back, braces, purfs and bindings with it and plan to use it for the bridge also. I've been using it since no 2.

Thanks Evan, yes, i put a shellac sealer on the WRC top before and it helps protect the fibers a lot, i'd say 2 hours in between sessions.

Thanks James, i did it 4 -6 inches at a time at first, cutting many tape pieces in advance, 5-6 inches long pieces are best for the pull, pushing either the purf or binding inward with the left thumb and pulling on the tape with the right one. As i progressed, in the longer stretches, i extended the length of the bead to ~ 8-9 inches and taped the end of the stretch so i could start taping faster at the start, if i make any sense!

Sorry Serge and JJ (and anyone else I may have wounded), I meant for doing both the purf's and binding at the same time, not the rest of the build, I know you've done everything else with HHG. Not meaning to diss you at all, just wasn't clear with my question/statement.

I guess you could just drip in the HHG between the binding and purfling and tape it down as you've described above if you just work in 4-6" increments.

Cool JJ and Serge et all. I'm amazed that you can glue up the top and back to the rims, I'm sure leery to try but hey, it's all reversible (even with titebond it's reversible). I know that you would have to pre-heat the rims before receiving the glue, but you got to get the thing on there quick and than all the go-bars.

How much time do you think there is to work with with HHG, 30-45 seconds before it tacks up to much? That's the part the scares me I guess, I don't know if I could be that quick.

Rod...you really can do this. The tops and backs became much easier once I tried Mario's method of using thicker HHG such that it would form a bead out of the bottle. Before that I had to have at least one other person assist in brushing it on the rims.

Now, I just lay down the bead...about 10 seconds, slap on the top and literally lay across it for 20 seconds while it tackifies and begins to hold things down. Then I quickly place 4 gobar rods at strategic locations and fill in the rest. The last gobar gets set within a minute total time.

No question that it requires speed and concentration. The dance must be rehearsed and everything laid out so there is NO wasted motion. About 1 out of 4 times I have to abort the process, clean up everything and start over. If I were doing this more frequently I know I could improve my efficiency.

My advice...give it a try but have some help the first couple of times.

I think I get why folks advocate using HHG for laminating braces and top/backs to ribs.

Help me understand the value in using HHG for bindings as gluing purflings and bindings seperately seems like a lot of unnecessary extra work. Further it increases the risk that the purfling doesn't seat with the bottom of the purfling channel - which would increase the chance of later having unsightly gaps between the purfling and bindings. Even the sage Mario uses CA for gluing on purfling/binding.

Serge -- get yourself a tape dispenser -- it's a lot easier and quicker than making sure you have enough pre-cut pieces. Your neighbourhood office depot sells them.
